Creating An Outline For A Research Paper: A Step-By-Step Guide

Creating an outline for your research paper can help you get all of your information in one place and it will aid in helping you write your research paper.  Since research papers are based on research that you have done on the topic, it can be hard to make sense of all that work, that is why an outline it great for a research paper.  Once you’re done with your research, you can start to create your outline.

How To Do An Outline For A Research Paper

  • At the top of you outline you want to put your topic and the thesis of your research paper.  This will remind you in each section of your outline what you want to be in your research paper.
  • Next you will outline your introduction.  The introduction of research paper has to grab their attention and tell them what you are trying to prove or what your research paper is about.  You want to keep this all in mind as you are writing your outline.
  • The next three sections of your outline will be your body paragraphs of your research paper.  Each of these outlined paragraphs should have a topic sentence, support for the main idea of the paragraph, and a concluding sentence that wraps up the paragraph and transitions it to the next idea in the next paragraph.  
  • The last section is where you outline your conclusion to your research paper.  While it can be similar to the introduction part of your outline, it also has to bring you research paper to an end and keep the reader thinking about the topic after they are done reading.  In your outline you can play around with what will be in your conclusion.  You should create a great opening sentence, restate your thesis, summarize all the main points, and you can even ask the reader a question.

If you follow how to do an outline like this, the only thing you will need to do is to complete full sentences from the subtopics in your outline.  You have all of the information there, now just write sentences for each on of them or if you wrote full sentences for your outline, then you just have to elaborate or add a sentence or two to make that subtopic more developed.  That is why is good to do an outline for whatever you are writing because then you will be prepared to write the final project.
